Lophocheilus obscurus group (various specimens)

Lophocheilus obscurus group (various specimens)

Workbook

All specimens were collected in Malaise traps (19-26 Sept #044, #051; 17-24 Oct #065).

These specimens appears identical to #034, which I have previously examined and documented identified in detail.

The following images provide additional example of this species (identified as belonging to the Lophocheilus obscurus group), including several additional views.

  1. The genital capsule is partly open in #065, exposing the apical tips of the parameres and aedeagus, and nicely illustrating the shapes of the epipygium and hypopygium

  2. The front legs are extended in #065 and #051, exposing the densely setose fore coxae.

  3. The antennal prominence in #051 is entirely black, without the pair of yellow spots seen in each of the other specimens. The spots are present, but small, on #044.

  4. Sizes vary, from 20mm (#044, #051) to 23mm (#065, #034)

  5. The hind legs of #051 are positioned such that S1 is clearly visible in a ventral view. The shape of S1 is an important character in the key to Lophocheilus species.

  6. The front legs of #044 are positioned such that the pronotum can be viewed laterally. Of particular note is the strongly curved, laterally deflexed side of the pronotal disc. This forms a subtriangular lateral surface … a common feature in the family.

This is a workbook page … a part of our website where we record the observations and references used in making species identifications. The notes will not necessarily be complete. They are a record for our own use, but we are happy to share this information with others.
