Perginae larvae batch 2

Workbook

This is the second collection of Perginae larvae which I am aiming to rear through to adult stage.

My goal is to obtain female Perga dorsalis adults for COI barcoding in order to determine whether Perga dorsalis and Perga affinis individuals identified morphologically have different barcodes.

Collection of larvae on Old Bridge Road - 12th September 2025

On 12th September, 2025 Kerri discovered a cluster of Perginae larvae on the leaf of a eucalypt sapling on Old Bridge Road. They were arranged in a rosette in the centre of that leaf. iNaturalist observation here.

We moved these larvae into a second insect cage and supplied them with bunches of eucalypt leaves collected from the same bush.

Voucher specimen 13th September, 2025

One larva was removed and fixed in 80% ethanol for a voucher specimen - #PW047.

It is much paler than the Wingan River larvae - thoracic segments are yellow, abdominal segments brown and tubercles are pale brown rather than black.

This is a workbook page … a part of our website where we record the observations and references used in making species identifications. The notes will not necessarily be complete. They are a record for our own use, but we are happy to share this information with others.
