Life in a Southern Forest

January in pictures

Our view of the forest this January is one of abundant insects, verdant plant growth, and a general richness of life. But at the level of the individual, life’s tough out there. Plants are engaged in a slow struggle for space and light. Males compete for territories and mates. Birds are constantly hunting in order to feed their growing broods.
And in one way or another, everything is living under threat. Even hunters go from predator to prey in a moment.

With each passing season, we come to know the forest just a little bit better. It’s not always an easy watch – bearing witness to the loss of the kingfisher chicks this month was upsetting – yet it is all part of the story.
Forest life is never dull and we’ll never tire of it.
